Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was an American painter and a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism, best known for his luminous color-field paintings that evoke deep emotion through simplicity and scale. Rather than depicting recognizable subjects, Rothko sought to express universal human feelings tragedy, ecstasy, and transcendence through large, floating rectangles of color that seem to pulse with inner light.
