Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and printmaker, widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He revolutionized modern art through his relentless innovation, founding Cubism alongside Georges Braque and reshaping the boundaries of painting, drawing, and sculpture. Picasso worked in multiple styles—Blue Period, Rose Period, Cubism, Neoclassicism, Surrealism—and was known for his ability to reinvent himself constantly.

He created over 20,000 artworks in his lifetime, often blending classical themes with radical form, emotion with abstraction, and figuration with symbolic power. Picasso’s work is deeply embedded in the story of modern art, and his legacy continues to shape contemporary aesthetics.

Le Chien is a deceptively simple, minimal line drawing of a dog, featured in Picasso’s Carnet à dessins (Sketchbook) from 1907. It captures the essence of the animal in just a few bold, unbroken strokes. Despite or because of its apparent simplicity, the drawing reveals Picasso’s mastery of form, gesture, and abstraction. He distills the character of the dog into a linear silhouette, merging childlike playfulness with confident draftsmanship.

This kind of drawing reflects his deep understanding of reduction: saying more with less, and trusting in the expressive power of a single line. It also shows the roots of later movements, such as Minimalism and contemporary illustration.

Picasso remains one of the most collected and valuable artists in the world. His paintings, drawings, and prints consistently achieve multi-million-dollar results at auction. Masterworks like Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) sold for $179.4 million in 2015. His works on paper, including sketchbook drawings like Le Chien, are highly sought after, typically fetching tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of euros.
